Roberts had a lengthy arrest record, but no outstanding warrants, when he fled from an early-morning traffic stop for having a headlight out. The resulting high-speed chase across three counties involved three agencies. Officers of two agencies were told to pull back but disobeyed. Roberts' SUV crashed and rolled in an interstate median, ejecting and killing him.
