How they died

No

Sergeant Alane M. Stoffregen, newly assigned to the Marine Unit, died during a deep-water training exercise in Lake Michigan about a mile off Navy Pier. Stoffregen had been underwater for half an hour when she signaled to her partner that she was heading for the surface. Once there, she apparently began showing signs of distress. According to the findings of the Cook County medical examiner's office and a U.S. Navy doctor, rough waters, exhaustion and panic contributed to Stoffregen's drowning; serious scrapes and bruises on her head and neck were apparently caused from her body colliding with the boat.
