Adel Zorob

Adel Zorob was a freelance Palestinian journalist based in the Gaza Strip, known for his impactful reporting and humanitarian efforts, particularly in helping children affected by the conflict. He worked with various media outlets, including the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa Voice Radio, where he reported on the situation in Gaza, focusing on the ongoing violence and the humanitarian crisis resulting from the Israeli military operations in the region.

Zorob was deeply dedicated to his work, using social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to share news and updates about the war in Gaza. His efforts to provide accurate, on-the-ground information from the conflict made him a trusted source for many. According to reports, Zorob was particularly committed to sharing information about wounded children, often posting about the challenges they faced during the fighting. His last message was sent shortly before his death, providing updates on the conflict and the dire conditions in Gaza.

On December 19, 2023, Zorob’s life was tragically cut short when an Israeli airstrike targeted his home in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza. At the time of the airstrike, Zorob was sheltering with his family and other civilians. The attack led to the deaths of 22 people, including 11 children, with many of the victims being members of Zorob’s family. His death, along with the deaths of other civilians, was widely condemned as an example of the risks journalists face while reporting from conflict zones.

In the aftermath of the attack, Amnesty International conducted an independent investigation, confirming that there was no evidence linking anyone in the targeted house to an armed group or military objective. The organization's findings raised further concerns about the targeting of civilians during military operations.

Zorob’s death sparked an international outcry, with calls for accountability and a deeper investigation into the incident. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azouley issued a statement mourning Zorob's death and urging for a transparent investigation into the attack. She emphasized the importance of protecting journalists and media personnel, especially in conflict zones, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2222 (2015), which calls for the protection of journalists in situations of armed conflict.

Despite his untimely death, Adel Zorob is remembered as a committed journalist whose work contributed to raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the impact of the ongoing conflict on civilians, particularly children. His death serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by journalists working in conflict zones and the importance of ensuring their protection under international law.
