Tragically, on December 18, 2023, Alwan was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. His death was part of a broader pattern of attacks on journalists in the region, with at least 97 Palestinian journalists reported killed by Israeli strikes since October 7, 2023. ​

Alwan's dedication to journalism and his efforts to document the realities in Gaza highlighted his commitment to informing the world about the situation in his homeland. His untimely death underscores the significant risks faced by journalists operating in conflict zones.
