Snyder went toward the governor's office at the Capitol. A state trooper tries to escort him away. Snyder opens his tuxedo jacket and "motions" at a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver loaded with bullets. Snyder does not pull the revolver out. Colorado State Trooper Jay Hemphill, a 12-year veteran, fires a bullet into Snyder's head and two bullets into his chest.
