Mira Tanboura
Gunshot wound during military operations by Israeli forces.
Mira was reportedly shot in the chest or head — consistent with many of the 95 documented cases where children were killed during Israel's November 2023 ground operations in Gaza. Witnesses alleged that she was killed by IDF gunfire in an area under Israeli control, and not during active fighting. Her death is one of many cases being reviewed by international human rights observers, though formal accountability remains elusive.
Biography
Mira Tanboura was a 6-year-old Palestinian girl who was shot and killed in Gaza in November 2023, during a period of intense Israeli military operations. Her death, confirmed by eyewitnesses and reported by the BBC, occurred in an area where the IDF was conducting operations. Mira’s killing was part of a larger pattern of child casualties in the conflict and became one of many tragic examples of civilians caught in crossfire or directly targeted in war zones.
Mira Tanboura, age 6, was one of Gaza’s many children born into a life shadowed by siege and violence. Her young life ended abruptly in November 2023, during an Israeli military assault. Witnesses say she was fatally shot in a residential area where Israeli forces were operating. She was not involved in any hostilities, and no warnings had been issued to evacuate the area beforehand. Mira’s death was investigated as part of a BBC report that gathered testimony for dozens of cases involving children shot in the head or chest during the war. Her case is emblematic of the failure to protect civilian life, particularly children, in conflict zones like Gaza. Her family, shattered by her loss, became one of many seeking answers and justice for their slain loved ones.

The BBC World Service has pieced together the stories of Layan al-Majdalawi, two, and Mira Tanboura, six, both killed in Gaza in separate incidents in November 2023, in areas where the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was operating. In response to our findings, the IDF said the details of Layan and Mira's cases had been recorded and "will be examined by the competent authorities". It added: "Intentional harm to civilians, especially children, is strictly prohibited." Layan and Mira are just two of more than 160 cases of children shot in the war in Gaza, for whom we have gathered accounts. We found that in 95 of these cases, the child had been shot in the head or chest. In 59 of those, we obtained testimony from eyewitnesses, either directly or via human rights organisations and medics. The witnesses alleged that 57 of these children were shot by the IDF, and two were shot by Palestinians - one in celebratory gunfire and the other in a gang conflict.
