Walid Sharif, 23, died from severe head injuries sustained during an Israeli military assault on worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem on April 22, 2022. During the third Friday of Ramadan, Israeli soldiers stormed the mosque’s courtyard and used force against hundreds of worshipers. Walid was shot at close range with a rubber-coated steel bullet to the head near the al-Magharba Gate, causing a skull fracture and a hemorrhage in his brain. After being dragged from the mosque grounds, despite his critical condition, he was further assaulted by soldiers before being taken to Hadassah Medical Center. His brain was deprived of oxygen for at least twenty minutes, leaving him in a coma. Despite medical efforts, doctors determined there was nothing more they could do, and Walid died from his injuries on May 15, 2022.
Biography
Walid Sharif was a 23-year-old Palestinian from Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem. He was known to be part of the community deeply connected to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a significant religious site for Muslims. Walid’s life was tragically cut short following a violent incident at the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.
On April 22, 2022, during the third Friday of Ramadan, Walid was among hundreds of worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound when Israeli soldiers stormed the area. The soldiers used excessive force, firing rubber-coated steel bullets and deploying drones that released gas bombs against the worshipers. Walid suffered a severe head injury near the al-Magharba Gate after being shot at close range with a rubber-coated steel bullet. After being critically wounded, he was dragged out of the mosque’s courtyard by the soldiers, who continued to assault him despite his serious condition. Walid was then taken to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. There, despite efforts by medical staff, he remained in a coma due to a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage caused by deprivation of oxygen for about twenty minutes.
