Biography

Hanin Abu Qayda was a 10-year-old Palestinian girl from Beit Hanoun, a town in the northern Gaza Strip. Her life was cut short on August 8, 2022, two days after she suffered critical injuries from an Israeli missile strike. Hanin was in a civilian car with family members when the Israeli army targeted the vehicle in the Um an-Nasr area. The family had been en route to celebrate a wedding within the family when the attack occurred. The strike killed her grandmother and injured seven other relatives. Despite intensive medical care, Hanin succumbed to her wounds, becoming one of the many child casualties in a three-day Israeli military offensive on Gaza.

Born and raised in Beit Hanoun, Hanin Abu Qayda was a joyful 10-year-old girl who had been looking forward to a family wedding. On August 6, 2022, while traveling with her relatives toward the groom’s house, the car they were in was struck by an Israeli missile in the village of Um an-Nasr. The strike instantly killed her 62-year-old grandmother, Na’ama Mohammad Abu Qayda, and left Hanin and several other family members seriously wounded. Hanin suffered life-threatening injuries, including severe damage to a major artery in her leg, which caused complications beyond the capacity of Gaza’s overstretched medical facilities. She held on for two days but died on August 8. Her death took place amidst an intense three-day Israeli military operation that left at least 46 Palestinians dead, including 15 children and 3 women, and over 360 wounded. Hanin’s story highlights the devastating toll the conflict has taken on Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable residents. What should have been a day of joy for her family became one of irreversible loss.
