An officer tried to stop Bill DeBeau because the officer had determined that a license plate on the van was stolen. DeBeau drove a block off Michigan, stopped the van and got out. He allegedly sprayed Mace in the officer's face, grabbed a .25-caliber pistol from the other and fired several shots at the officer. The officer returned fire, killing DeBeau.
