Lewis's minivan was stopped in a liquor store parking lot by police likely looking for his wanted cousin, who'd attacked an officer days earlier. The unarmed Lewis was fatally shot five times by Detective Johann Steimle, claiming both that he'd used the other as a weapon, and then appeared to reach for a gun.
