Leathers was a pedestrian struck and killed as he walked down the centerline of a highway, in dark clothes, rigidly "as if at attention." He was thrown more than 30 feet by the impact. The driver was an off-duty deputy with a spotty driving record, with a license suspended twice and a history including at least two crashes.
