Officer Clair "Tom" Thompson responded to Robert H. Clingenpeel's apartment, where a 911 call had been made at 8:36 p.m. Clingenpeel allegedly answered the door with a handgun pointed at Thompson, prompting Thompson to fire two shots, both of which struck Clingenpeel. Clingenpeel's daughter reportedly told police her father, a Korean War veteran with failing eyesight, had recently sought medical attention for dementia.
