Gilreath was wanted in nearby Prince George's County Maryland for assaulting a police officer. Located in a stolen car with stolen plates, DC officers approached and were dragged when Gilreath suddenly moved his car with the door ajar. He was fatally shot. Witnesses vigorously disputed the police version of events.
