Shawn Nivongsa's northbound Jeep and officer William Dawson's eastbound cruiser collided at about 2:25 a.m. The Jeep flipped over and struck a pole. Nivongsa died at the scene. His two passengers were injured. Dawson sustained minor injuries. According to investigators, Dawson was responding to a low-priority call and hadn't activated his emergency lights or siren.
