Suicide
Burleson was arrested and transported to the jail on a charge of actual physical control of a other, handcuffed and taken to the police department for a breath test. Burleson's blood-alcohol level was 0.14. He got out of the handcuffs during the ride to the jail, and when Vinita officer Jim Curry tried to take him out of the car, Burleson took his gun, shot him, and ran. Police caught up with him nearby, and he shot and killed himself.
