Police were summoned at about 10 p.m. and found John J. Hjort standing on a railing of the I-480 bridge between Omaha and Council Bluffs. According to police, when officers approached and started talking to Hjort, he stepped over the railing, let go of the pole and plunged to his death in the Missouri River below. An Omaha police helicopter crew reportedly saw Hjort in the water, and he appeared to be swimming. Council Bluffs police said Harrah's Casino employees launched a rescue boat and pulled Hjort from the water. Hjort was pronounced dead at a hospital.
