Cofiell stumbled into a 7-11 seeking help for a medical problem, likely caused by drugs. When paramedics and police arrived he fled, then he again sought help from an off-duty officer in a marked car. When he heard his name broadcast on the police radio, he fled once more. The off-duty officer struggled with him, subdued him, and Cofiell died in an ambulance shortly afterward.
