Barefoot and shirtless, Williams tried to kidnap a 16-year-old female. Unsuccessful, he stole a other, drove about six blocks, then abandoned it to escape on foot. Officer Donald Kankel pursued Williams to a wooded area, then tried to handcuff him. Williams punched him. Officer Kankel fell to the ground, then drew his pistol and fatally shot Williams in the chest.
