Mistaken for a murder suspect, Williams fled from county police at speeds of over 100 MPH then afterwards on foot through a residential neighborhood. The approaching deputy thought he saw Williams reach toward his waistband and shot him fatally. He'd been unarmed. The case was controversial; the family hired lawyer Johnnie Cochran and filed a wrongful death suit.
