Claude D. Smith was killed after the allegedly stolen Oldsmobile he was in crashed into a utility pole during a police chase. According to police, officers began following the car shortly after a robbery was reported at a nearby gas station. Smith was thrown from the Oldsmobile at about 2:15 a.m. Police said Smith and the two women in the car were not the gas station robbery suspects officers had been seeking. The driver, Kelly Collins, 19, was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for second-degree murder.
