Whittington was killed during a high speed police pursuit. He was a passenger in a 1996 GMC Sierra pick-up truck driven by Russell L. Hart, 44, which was being chased by deputy Johnny Hall, who had tried to pull Hart over for speeding. The truck went off the road and over-corrected before it left the road again and hit a tree. Whittington was pronounced dead at the scene just before 10 p.m.
