Oxford had suffered from mental illness since the age of 17, and had been diagnosed as a schizophrenic. With his condition deteriorating, "short-tempered and demanding", threatening to torch his parents' seaside house, his father gave him an ultimatum to get help with a deadline of 3/30. On that day Oxford barricaded himself in his bedroom, forced a confrontation, and was fatally shot.
