At 10:47 p.m., trooper Fred Sweeney's patrol car struck a motorcycle driven by Michael Wallace. Wallace was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital. In a wrongful death lawsuit, Wallace's widow alleged that Sweeney's car crossed the centerline and struck her husband's motorcycle. The case was set to go to trial in July 2007, but according to Wallace's attorney, on the eve of the trial the Michigan State Police acknowledged negligence in Sanilac County Circuit Court. In December 2007, a judge awarded Wallace's widow $4.4 million.
