Day had been arrested 10 times in the prior 18 years. Reacting to an anonymous tip about drug being sold out of an apartment, local police dispatched undercover officers and encountered Day. As they tried to bust him he first fled, then grabbed a folding knife from an officer's pants and stabbed him with it. He was fatally shot.
