Two local officers approached Hanick in the parking lot of a Days Inn, suspicious because he hadn't changed positions in three hours. Once approached Hanick began to act edgy. He pulled a gun and shot one officer in the face, wounding him seriously. Hanick, an ex-con and career criminal, was killed by return fire.
