Officers Ruben Rodriquez and Blaine Hultquist helped paramedics to subdue Kelley, who resisted treatment because he thought paramedics were trying to kill him. Kelley later died at Methodist Central Hospital. Kelley had used heroin and cocaine earlier that day.
