A deputy tried to stop a car near Beaver Avenue and Meredith Drive at about 9:30 p.m., having discovered it was reported stolen. The driver fled and the deputy gave chase. The car went out of control, sheared off a light pole and became wedged between some trees. Wilbert McDowell III, a passenger, died at the scene. The driver and another passenger were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
