Ruel F. Dempster fled a drunken driving stop. He got out of the car and ran and Luke Hoffman chased after him on foot before being run down by fellow officer Stephen J. Wofsey. A county jury found Dempster guilty of several misdemeanors--including failure to stop after an accident, driving without a license and possession of marijuana--but was unable to reach a verdict on the manslaughter charge.
