According to DPD, Mesquite officers chased Smith into Dallas after he robbed a store, took a hostage and tried to escape in the hostage's other. He made a stand on R.L. Thornton Freeway. Dallas officers responded. Officers Gerald Melgoza, Michael Fontenot, Mark Edwards and Artie Christian shot at Smith a total of 22 times. Smith died at the scene.
