Deadly force
Ramirez, wielding and 18-inch machete, stopped traffic on Interstate 37. Deputy Burl Smith responded, telling Ramirez to drop the weapon. Ramirez approached him. Deputy Smith fired once. Ramirez continued to advance 25 feet as Deputy Smith fired another 12 rounds, striking Ramirez 10 times and killing him. Ramirez's family filed a lawsuit.
