Caldwell was one of four men caught in a drug sting arranged by the FBI and local police. Their main target was another man, Frank Jackson, and the sting involved misleading Jackson and his three "big goons with AK-47s" into a phony revenge-robbery of 10 kilograms of cocaine from a false Mexican dealer. All four men were wounded in the operation, Caldwell fatally.
