With mental issues well known to police--in the habit of calling dispatchers to report rats driving cars downtown, or Jesus Mary and Joseph walking down a city street--Sarver was confronted by officers when he was reported waving a gun around on his front yard. After a six-hour armed standoff, he pointed a rifle at the police and was shot to death.
