Officers Hans Bryson and Ken King responded to a complaint that South had burglarized a other. A witness had caught South and was holding her face down. Officer King handcuffed South. Paramedics responded three minutes later. South died at Methodist Charlton Medical Center of unknown causes. A toxicology report later determined that South had died of a cocaine overdose.
