Sergeant Jason Wilkins, responding to a domestic assault call, saw Ward choking his girlfriend. Ward drew a gun and threatened to kill her, then pointed the gun at Sergeant Wilkins. Sergeant Wilkins fatally shot Ward. The Texas Ranger Division investigated the shooting. Ward's girlfriend said that Sergeant Wilkins saved her life.
