In a raid looking for a murder suspect, Detroit police fired a flash bang grenade into a room where Aiyana was sleeping on a couch. An officer, Joseph Weekley, fired a single shot, hitting Aiyana in the head. He was tried for involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment with a gun. The jury hung and did not return a verdict.
