Officer Jeffery Thompson responded to a report that Villareal, bipolar, was threatening suicide with a pistol. Officer Thompson shot at Villareal twice, killing him. Villareal's sister, Bethany, said that she saw the shooting and claimed that her brother did not point the pistol at the officer. Officer Thompson, a 15-year veteran of multiple law enforcement agencies, quit his job.
