An officer stopped Scott Kirk at about 6 p.m. after receiving a report of a possibly intoxicated driver. Kirk reportedly pulled over, but drove away as the officer was talking to him. Police gave chase until Kirk lost control of his other, which went into a ditch and hit several trees. Kirk died at the scene about 2 miles north of Vinton.
