Marciea Adkins was killed when her car was struck by a stolen SUV driven by a 16-year-old being chased by police. At about 6 a.m., police said Marquis Harrison stole an Range Rover that had been left idling on West North Avenue. An officer stopped the SUV after seeing Harrison run a red light at Blackhawk Street and Elston Avenue. Harrison allegedly backed into the officer's car and almost struck two other officers. Police pursued Harrison until he ran a stop sign at Hoyne and Armitage, broadsiding Adkins' other. In a 2012 plea agreement, Harrison pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder in Adkins' death and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
