Hernandez claims LaFleur ran a red light. Hernandez stopped him at a resident's gate, where he claims LaFleur refused commands to get out of the car and instead put the car in reverse, ending up in a ditch. Hernandez further claims LaFleur made a furtive move for a gun in the car, so he shot him. Witnesses say he was trying to put the car in park, and "they just started shooting."
