Daunte D. Simmons was killed and a woman lost her leg when a 2003 Ford Mustang fleeing officer Dwayne George hit them as they walked on the Poplar Street Bridge. According to police, the Mustang struck a squad car at Market and Memorial at about 3:35 a.m. George followed the car onto the bridge into East St. Louis. Simmons was reportedly knocked off the bridge and fell to dry land below. A lawsuit contended that George didn't turn on his overhead lights for the first minute of the chase and pursued at high speeds despite heavy traffic.
