Zepeda drove through an intersection as officer Elizabeth Padron, pursuing a stolen other with her lights and sirens on, ran a red light and collided with her. Zepeda died on May 7. Padron was slightly injured. It was the first of two officer-involved collisions in San Antonio that resulted in the deaths of bystanders in 2012.
