A deputy came to Stump's trailer to investigate whether he'd violated probation by drinking. Stump emerged from a bedroom, and after excusing himself to find his shoes, returned from his bedroom barefoot and armed. An intense close-quarters gun battle between the two men resulted in Stump with multiple fatal injuries and the deputy unhit.
