Suttle attempted to use his van as a battering ram to smash open a garage door, a garage that happened to be owned by a police officer. The officer and his wife were alerted at about 7 a.m. by the noise and an alarm system. Both of them got in their car and approached from the alley. Suttle is said to have wounded the officer in an attempt to drive away; Suttle was fatally shot.
