A deputy with the sheriff's department was eastbound on Dupont Road and was responding to a reported crash at the intersection of Tonkel and Hursh roads. Elmo Portee was driving a van that was northbound on Diebold Road that entered the intersection with Dupont and was struck by the cruiser, police said. Three people were inside the van. Portee was killed, a woman sustained serious injuries, and a girl suffered minor injuries.
