Stanford was riding a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle on Gist Bridge Road when he came up behind the unmarked Dodge Charger of a Union County Sheriff's Office deputy. McDougald said Stanford passed the deputy and continued on Gist Bridge Road. The deputy lost sight of Stanford. Stanford ran off the left side of the road, crashed into a pole, and died.
