Fernandez was sought, along with a teenaged accomplice, as a suspect in the theft of a Rolex watch from a jewelry store. When found by police he attempted to flee twice, once threatening officers with his other, and was eventually shot. Reporting was unclear on whether or not Fernandez had been armed.
