Leach was shot by his own father, a police officer retired from the Rochester force as a captain and currently part time in the Perry police force. Leach Sr. mistook his son for a prowler in their shared room at a beach motel. Leach Sr. was noted in Rochester for his 1975 shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old victim of domestic abuse.
