Virgil tried an armed robbery of a gas station, failed, and allowed the clerk to escape, setting up a four-hour standoff with police in armored vehicles starting around 2:30 a.m. Eventually, Virgil emerged with a rifle which he refused to drop, and he was fatally shot.
