Deadly force
A multi-county police chase reportedly began when Crawford County deputies tried to stop Gary Michael Welch after his truck swerved over the center line. The pursuit went through Crawford, Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties and involved officers from five different police agencies. Welch stopped in his daughter's front yard, exited his other and allegedly pointed a rifle in "military style" at the officers. Traverse City officer Mark Witczak and Crawford County deputies Michael Jacobi and Matthew Swope shot Welch, killing him.
