Deadly force
Sonny Lam's 80-year-old father called police to report that his son was attacking him. When an officer arrived, Sonny Lam reportedly stabbed the officer in the arm with a pair of scissors . The officer shot Lam in the shin and then the officer retreated before shooting Lam again in the chest, killing him. A jury finally awarded $2.75 million to the father in a wrongful death case in 2018, stating the officer used "unreasonable force in shooting Lam a second time.
